A Photo Project by Thomas J. Avery __ On dark, clear nights in the summer months, the Milky Way Galaxy stretches across the sky and puts on a natural light show like nothing else. It is an amazing and humbling experience to stare into the cloudlike masses illuminated by billions of stars. Seeing the Milky Way just barely begins to give us an understanding of the massive scale of our own galaxy, the Universe beyond, and how lucky we are to be on this tiny Earth so full of life. __

__ Capturing the night sky in these photographs is a matter of technology and technique (and being in the right location at the right time, of course!). I've written an article (PDF file, 3.5 MB) that describes in detail all aspects of how these photos were made. __
